Effective Communication Skills (Post#1)

Effective communication skills are important to everybody. From formal job interviews to personal conversations, it is imperative to be able to communicate with others clearly. To me the most important skill that I hope to pick up during this course is definitely oral communication. Most managers are very proficient in communicating effectively in work environments, which I think is the key to success in career development. In this day and age, competition is huge in the job market and this skill will definitely help me out during interviews.

For example, in an interview you have to be confident to get selected. That confidence comes from knowing that you are good in communicating with others. Stuttering and hesitating while answering a question doesn’t leave a very good impression. Moreover, how do you deal with problems at the workplace if you don’t know how to connect with your colleagues or even the boss?

Moreover, it is also a tool for personal growth to me. By conversing with people we can share our experiences and grow as individuals. How much can you experience the world by yourself anyway? It is always interesting to learn about another person, and if that person is from a different culture its even better! And there is no better way to hear it from his/her own mouth.

However, I think oral communication is challenging because you have to think on your feet. During a sms conversation you can just think and articulate your replies before hitting the send button, whereas during an oral conversation you have to just keep talking and responding promptly. Moreover, being a person with English as a second language I am not much fluent and confident in talking in English as I am in writing it. But I hope to change that this semester!

  1. This is a well crafted post, Hasan. It's clear, concise and focused on your own specific communication needs. The main thrust of your need for better oral skills is also very well supported with concrete examples. There are only a few areas of language use where you could make some improvements.

    Possibilities:

    1) In this day and age, competition is huge in the job market and this skill will definitely help me out during interviews. >>>
In addition, because competition toady is huge in the job market, this skill will definitely help me out during interviews.

    2) ...its even better! >>> ...it's even better!

...no better way to hear it THAN from his/her own mouth.

    5) ...you have to think on your feet. >>> me? How about ...it requires a person to think spontaneously. (I would avoid the cliche and the use of "you" to give this a slightly more formal tone.)

    6) ...I am not much fluent ... >>> ...I am not so fluent....

Thank you for your fine effort.

  2. Thank you Brad, for your detailed reply.

I had no idea there were so many mistakes in my post. I will try to be more careful from now on about grammar and language.

  3. Hi Hassan =]

Good effort on your first blog post!

I liked the points you brought up in your post, especially the one about how by talking to people with different backgrounds, we can learn more about ourselves. I came to realise this just after 2 lessons of ES2007s where I am learning so much more with our fellow classmates who all come from different backgrounds!

I hope that this course will help you to achieve your communication goals.

  4. Hi Hassan,

Thank you for a very interesting post indeed! I agree with you, especially on the point you brought up about having to think on your feet in an oral communication. It certainly makes it even harder when you have to converse in a language that is your second language. Coincidentally, Patrik also posted about oral communication, its importance in the workplace and its relevance to a managerial position. Perhaps the common ground comes from the fact that he, too, does not do English as a first language. To add on, I like how you further related the importance of oral communication as a fundamental personal tool.

In fact, having listened to you speak in class, I think you are doing pretty well thinking on your feet and expressing yourself. With your zest and positive attitude towards learning, I am sure you will continue to get better at it!

    1. Hey Min,

Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it! I am happy to see you agree with my post in general. I read Patrick's post after your comment and found out he basically shares the same notion about communication as me. So I guess many of my classmates believe that communication skills are important in achieving career goals.

I will be looking forward to more constructive feedback like this in the future. Once again, thank you for your well wishes!

  5. Hi Hasan,

I am digging the blog name(:

Also, I like how your post was very clear in structure. I have much to learn from you in that aspect, especially how you segued from one point to another.

However, I feel that a little bit more of elaboration on the importance of workplace communication such as an example would drive the point home better.

Also, the conclusion ended rather abruptly so perhaps next time you could work on that more.

    Cheers,
    Hakeem

    1. Hey Hakeem,

Glad that you liked my blog name :D

Actually, like you said I was alslo thinking on elaborating on the importance of workplace communication. But the word limit is only 300. That's why I had to trim my post a bit. Same reason goes also for the abrupt ending. I would feel better if I could add 2-3 sentences at the end. Hopefully in the next post I will be able to manage the word limit better than this time. Really sorry for the sudden ending!

I hope you will continue to advice me like this on how to improve in the future.

  6. Hi Hasan,

Great work on your first post!

I thought your views on communication and expectations from this course were conveyed clearly. I liked how you emphasized that communicating with different cultures not only improves your knowledge about the culture, but also helps you grow as an individual.

Also, the differences you pointed out between oral and other forms of communication like thinking on your feet and being prompt, are very true.

Would love to read more posts from you!

  7. Hi Hasan,
You have almost the same topic as I do. I totally agree with what you have written! Devolopping the oral communication skills will help a lot when you apply for a new job, meet new people and so on.

About the sms-part of your post, never thought about it but it is true that you can think before you send it!

    1. Hey Patrik,

Thanks for your comment. I read your post already and saw that you share the same ideas as me. Hopefully this module will equip us both with the skills needed to face the challenges in the workplace.

And about the sms example, the same could be said about internet messages, emails or even these blog comments.

Will be looking forward to seeing more comments from you!

  8. Effective communication skill is the basic yet very essential requirement in each segment of life and when it comes for the business owners it becomes much more important, and when it gets combined with such services as most of the business owners are using like 1800 numbers in Australia, then it can show much better results.
